Why Polynesian Tattoos?
Whether it be for reasons of heritage or a simple appreciation of the culture, Polynesian tattoos are very popular. Because the early Polynesians were seafaring individuals whose navigational skills were very advanced, an image of the sea and/or islands is a very popular image for those who desire a permanent visual of this ancient culture.
Polynesian navigators were once said to be guided by both the sun and the stars, making either of these two images an ideal choice for Polynesian tattoos. Additionally, they were said to be able to locate islands based on bird flight patterns. Therefore, a terrific way to celebrate this culture is with a depiction of a bird in flight as if it were guiding someone to a new destination.

Because island scenes, tropical images and picturesque ocean views are popular in Polynesian culture, they also make ideal choices for Polynesian tattoos. With water being a popular part of the area's past and present, fishing plays a large role in the culture itself. As such, legends were developed that told of the islands being brought to the sea's surface by a magic fishhook, which makes this symbol an important part of Polynesian legend and lore.
For those who study various legends of any island, they will find that they are plentiful and all natives are familiar with the stories of yesteryear. Another such legend is that of a beautiful goddess who creates lightning and also provides a plentiful catch for fishermen. For those who are familiar with any or all of the legends, these may offer some helpful ideas as to how best to create Polynesian tattoos from some of the greatest stories ever told on the island.
In selecting a tattoo, most people desire an image that reflects something about their personality, their heritage or their life in general. With a culture so rich in history, Polynesian families are sure to have valuable stories to share that somehow lead them to where they are today. If this is the case, an image that is conveyed through the words of a relative can be put onto paper and recreated in the form of a tattoo.
Getting A Polynesian Tattoo Design
If you are interested in Polynesian tattoos and have your own idea for an image, draw a sketch on paper and take it to your local tattoo artist. Be sure to add color or let him/her know which coloration you prefer and explain any additional details that need clarification. Upon reviewing the sketch, a tattoo artist will be able to decide whether he/she can provide a quality recreation based on the image. In many cases, artists invite their customers to bring in a sketch or express their ideas in order to achieve the most unique version of Polynesian tattoos.
